THE CYCLONE TOTEM PROJECT

During the past few months we have investigated and researched the possibility of building various monuments and recently have developed a model cyclone, an interesting, engaging and interactive project for us all. After consulting with experts and experienced artists regarding the challenging task of building a cyclone we have come up with a creative model to our satisfaction which we would like to build on our land as a gift to the whole community.

The Model:

The Cyclone Totem monument will become a catalyst for the evolvement of other projects and the future development of rother Rockie with Totem Modelthe whole site. The large circle around the central cyclone monument will have a diameter of 52 meters. Along this great circle, five other totem monuments representing the cultures of other Elder clans around Weipa will be constructed. This will offer other central tribes the opportunity to be involved in this massive display and expression of culture, tradition and knowledge. Each of these totem monuments, in full glory of their detailed sculpture, decorations and carvings by local artists will be connected to each other via the large circle pathway and will also be connected to the central cyclone monument through a straight pathway. Consultation with all the surrounding Aboriginal groups is underway to identify their respective totems. The monument will be made of steel, steel mesh, concrete, paint, mosaic mural and lighting.

The Material:

The monument will be made of steel, steel mesh, concrete, paint, mosaic mural and lighting. It was not easy to represent a cyclone with solid material, as cyclone is force and power of wind and air. It will be 7 meters high, and will be stretched on a circle with 9 m diameter.

The Finished Product:

The cyclone totem was successful completed and installed at Evans Landing in September 2009.  The sculpture is a beautiful representation of the Alngith totems including a cyclone,a magnificent sea eagle, a saw fish and diamond scale mullet.  This public art feature is a celebration of our culture and will help our people and community as a whole to see, recognize and appreciate our cultural heritage and history.
