Historical handover to Traditional Owners

Weipa’s important waterfront site was returned to the Algnith and Napranum People, who descend from Ruchook and Malakulla People. The freehold handover is the first step towards cultural and economic development for Malaruch and the Algnith people and matriarch Granny Sue has been working for seven years to have the land and sea handed back her people.
The Algnith People are some of the most dispossessed people of all the Cape York Aboriginal people with up to 80% of their traditional homelands lost to mining operations as well as a significant portion of DOGIT land also gone. The land at Evans Landing represents a significant stepping stone towards compensation for their loss under the WCCA and Weipa Township Agreement and is the first major outcome for the Traditional Owners of this land.
