Land And Sea, You and Me
Thousands of tourists around Australia look for an opportunity to experience traditional indigenous performing and visual art in its traditional setting with modern sound, light and theater facility. The Weipa festival will provide just that. During the month of September, a beautiful park by the ocean will be set up for a two-day celebration of tradition, culture, nature, food, fun and arts. The festival will stage some of the most exotic and exciting dance group from the entire region. Dance groups from as far as Townsville area will be attracted to this historical expression of Aboriginal performing and visual arts.
While the main stage will feature non-stop performing groups from many indigenous traditions there will be a large craft market where the best of local and regional craft and art will be displayed and sold. Food will be another major attraction. The traditional hangi, cultural and international food facility from the Cultural Hub will be transferred to the festival site for feeding thousand of locals, schools children and visitors alike.
Our research have indicated there are limited out-door activities and fun facilities in Weipa and this festival will be most welcome by the whole community from far and wide.
A workshop fully equipped with craft, and art tools will be made available to the local and regional artists to develop their decorational and traditional art for the event. All the festival decorative attractions such as lanterns, gate ways, murals, stage backdrops and site decorations will be made by local indigenous artists in this workshop. |
